MATCHING OUTFITS

At D.W.S. we run separate Sales for Womenswear and Menswear for several different reasons, although mainly because our Sales our too big to be squashed into one.  But here's another reason.  We really think you should look different than the woman/women in your life, and vice versa.

Unlike husband and wife Mel and Joey Schwanke have worn matching outfits for 35 years.  81-year-old Joey from Fremont, Neb.said that she and her husband, Mel, use their matching outfits to "enhance" their relationship, which has been going strong for 65 years.  Joey Schwanke picks out the ensembles, which often have a floral theme, because the couple owns and operates a successful flower shop in Fremont.

The two have 146 custom-made matching outfits which typically match Joey's dress with Mel's tie.  Take it from us, they would not be able to shop at D.W.S.  Yet .... but maybe they are in to something?

JOAN : YOU GO GIRL

Occasionally at D.W.S. there is the odd (polite) tussle when two of our customers want to buy the same fabulous outfit, and maybe like in this clip we unearthed, sometimes the Designer themselves just cant let go either.

It's our Birthday Salute to the Fashion Queen that made all of us lose our dignity and replace it with such wide shoulders and far too much colour and bling.  BUT we still love her.  Happy 79th Birthday Joan.  You Go Girl!

FIT FOR A QUEEN

We are fervent royalists at DWS anD not simply because like HM The Queen we are also celebrating a Jubilee Anniversary this year.  Ours is a mere Silver to mark our 25 years  compared to Her Majesty's magnificent 60 Years Diamond Year.  We love her sense of style too that is very much of her own making and sets her apart.  She doesn't tend to hang with much of a fashionable set however so our eyes popped out when we saw Inkhosikati LaMbikiza in the crowd the other day.  Fabulous name to match her crowd stealing outfit, and she is almost  a  Queen too being one of the King of Swaziland's fourteen wives.

And she stole the show at night-time when she turned up at Buckingham Palace wearing this little number.

We'll be sending His Majesty The King an Invitation to our next DWS Sale in June, he's bound to find something fabulous for his other 13 Consorts and he'll save himself a fortune at the same time.  We just hope he brings Inkhosikati LaMbikiza along too, we are so smitten.

BRAVE NEW WORLD

Last week we featured a video clip from the 1950's when  young gals went  to Charm Schools to 'finish' their education and get ready for the brave new world by ensuring they wore the right sunglasses with the right outfit.  At D.W.S. we like to give equal attention to the men and so we dug this video out of the fashion vaults to see what guys were expected to wear back in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. Brave new world doesn't come into it!  Why would these guys put themselves put them through such an embarrassing ordeal, and right in front of these older women who couldn't get a close enough look at these skimpy clad chaps.

We do run the ONLY Designer Sale totally devoted to Men and we can promise you that at our next Sale on June 22nd to June 24th, you will find the latest summer merchandise for over 180 Designers but NOTHING like these clothes at all.

MAKING A SPECTACLE OF YOURSELF

At D.W.S. we love to help you look your best and you know you can spend hours at the Sale trying on as many clothes and accessories to your hearts content. Sometimes even the most seasoned shopper and stylish fashionista could do with some advice, BUT far be it for us to take it upon ourselves to tell you how to put your look together.  We'll leave that to others like the folks at the LUCY CLAYTON CHARM ACADEMY who gave their young ladies a lesson in what sunglasses to wear.    Enjoy ... and see you on June 16th.

HAPPY 60TH J-P

Happy Birthday Jean-Paul.

We have just one question for you?  Can you still be an 'Enfant Terrible' at 60?    We do hope so ......

He's celebrating with a glorious exhibition of his work  (yep, another one)  His is titled "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk," and it opened last month at San Francisco's De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.   We so wish we could go.  If this is your neck of the world PLEASE let us know how it is .

FROM FASHION TO ART

It's hard to go to visit a Museum or Art Gallery without tripping over a Fashion Designer this year. Yesterday we wrote about the Christian Loubertain Exhibition at London's Museum: then there is Prada & Schiaparelli at the Metropolitan Museum in NY; Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuiton at the Louvre in Paris and still to come is 'Britain Creates' at the V & A in July and then in September the one we at D.W.S. have particularly being waiting for Biba and Beyond:Barbara Hulanicki at Brighton Museum.

Meanwhile its the turn of 'retired' iconic designer Helmut Lang who has his NY debut for his installations and sculptures.  Like the garments he once designed, he has used unusual materials for his art ... this time mainly rubber.  They make for stunning visual pieces and he has high hopes that people will accept them, and his new persona, without always remembering who he once was.  Whether he achieves that only time will tell, but we are very happy to recommend that you go see and make you own mind up.

Never going the normal route about anything, Mr Lang's Exhibition is in a space that is half gallery/half private home in Greenwich village. These grand elegant rooms are the setting for the matted black sheepskins on the walls and black stalagmites sprouting from the floor. Definitely worth jumping on the Virgin flight for.

Opens on May 5th at 24 Washington Square North, NY and will remain on display through June 15.

THESE BOOTS ARE NOT MADE FOR WALKING

If you are a fan of the Man who gave us red soles, then you will want to hurry down to the DESIGN MUSEUM where there are celebrating 20 years of his wonderful work.  He is if course, iconic french shoe designer CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN and whilst at D.W.S. we love every single stud and jewel of the man (we even sold his shoes for a couple of seasons) we still think many of them are more suited to be googled over in a showcase than being adopted as footwear that one attempts to walk down Bond Street without a mishap.

The Exhibition opened today May 1st .....yes, of course we were there .... and it runs through until July 9th. Its truly fabulous.  Don't miss it.

P.S. The people at the Museum want to warn you that the Fetish Room (!) and Hologram contain images of partial nudity!  Pluessse!  What else would we expect from the Man.
